Balancing Progress and Pitfalls in the Climate Crisis
|
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the global authority on environmental issues, working to coordinate responses to the planet’s most pressing challenges. UNEP operates as the principal advocate for sustainable development within the UN system, specifically Affordable and Clean Energy, Climate Action, and Partnerships for the Goals. Delegates will convene to deliberate on a rapidly growing topic at the intersection of science, economics, and ethics: climate technologies. With the global climate crisis accelerating, there is increasing reliance on innovations such as renewable energy, carbon capture and storage, and geoengineering to mitigate the effects of climate change. However, concerns persist regarding the economic feasibility, environmental risks, and unequal global access to these technologies. This session will challenge delegates to move beyond technological optimism and critically evaluate the risks of unintended consequences, overreliance on innovation, and worsening global inequalities. Solutions will focus on creating frameworks that promote equitable access, environmental safeguards, and economic scalability of climate technologies. This committee is ideal for high school delegates interested in environmental policy and emerging technologies.
