Topic A: The Use of Technology in Migration Management
Topic B: The Protection of Children in Migration |
Today, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the United Nations’ leading body pursuing humane and orderly migration. The IOM has a unique history. Though it was founded in 1951, it did not become part of the United Nations system until 2016. Long before its incorporation into the United Nations, the IOM developed its modus operandi, “migration management.” This committee will tackle two topics closely related to contemporary challenges of migration management. Topic A will investigate the impacts of technology on IOM activities, including technology’s potential contributions to the fight against human trafficking and the implementation of technological advancements to modernize border control. Topic B will investigate the IOM’s role in protecting minors. The IOM explicitly recognizes the increased vulnerability of migrants who are children and undertakes wide-ranging projects and initiatives to address the needs of unaccompanied minors on the move.
